After a successful away day against Sueno FC, River Light’s League Two team will play its home opener against St. Charles FC on Sunday. The Missouri-based club sits on top of the Heartland Division with victories against Sueno FC (2-1) and Chicago City SC (5-1).
“From what I've seen on film they're physically gifted opposition,” Head coach Charlie Latshaw said. “They're definitely not short on athletes that are willing to compete for the ball and tackle and work really hard in defensive bays.”
St. Charles comes into this match-up red-hot, only conceding twice this season while scoring even goals in their first two games.
“They'll try to break us up and force us into slowing the game down and then they'll probably look for other opportunities to counter, they have a lot of pace up top and a lot of size,” Latshaw said. “They have some dangerous players in attack that can really hurt you on the counter attack,” Latshaw added.
Some athletes that River Light FC will have to look out for are Jack Wagoner and John Gates. Gates has three goals this season with an assist, while Wagoner scored a brace against Chicago City last weekend.
“For us it will be a good test against another team that's at the top of the table right now and kind of see where we're at,” Latshaw said. “Do we have the goods to come out of this as contenders or are we going to be a team that's gonna be scraping by to get ourselves in the playoffs?”
ick-off for the home opener at Spartan Athletics Complex is Sunday at 5 p.m!
