Late game heroics were enough for River Light FC to push past Sueno FC for a 3-2 victory at Spartan Athletic Park. Coming from behind twice, the Lights kept their playoff hopes alive as the season continues to wind down.
Starting off their three game home stand against the Joliet-based side, River Light found themselves down a goal early in the first half. Providing early pressure upfront, Sueno got on the end of a misplaced pass in the middle of the field, leaving an onrushing attack for the opening goal of the match.
As River Light got closer to their first, Sueno was able to contain the Lights for the rest of the half.
Eight minutes into the second half, River Light took advantage of a throw-in, working quickly and making their way to the 18-yard box. On the edge of the area, Nico Bartlett slipped a ball to Nick Fernandez who placed it expertly past the opposition's keeper.
Around the 80th minute, Sueno reclaimed the advantage as they slipped past the defense. With their backs to the wall, the Lights pressed hard out of possession and slowed down in possession as they looked for the equalizer and the three points.
Taking advantage of some chaos in the box from a long free-kick, defender Ryan Quintos was lurking in the box when he got on the end of a loose ball that he put away for the second equalizer of the game for the Lights.
With time slipping away, River Light again made the most of a throw-in, maneuvering around the Sueno defense while Fernandez ran to the end of the field, making a last second cross to an open James Lynch who tapped the ball in for the game winner.
After defeating Sueno FC, only two games remain for River Light FC as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive. Next time at Spartan Athletic Park, River Light will face the Chicago Dutch Lions FC on July 10th at 7 p.m.
